Tomorrow 5/6C, we will be doing science with 5/6B! Have a look at this photo and see if you can work out what we will be doing…
You will need to write the beginning of your science report with your partner and try to work out what is going to happen in the experiment.
Today, we are going to try both normal full sugar Coke, Diet Coke, and Lemonade. You need to think about whether there will be any differences in the experiment.
We are also going to try a slushie experiment. Can we make our own slushies without using a machine? What materials or reactions are we going to need?
On Wednesday we traveled by train out to Spotswood to ScienceWorks. First we explored the sports and maths parts and participated in games and activities. We then saw the Planetarium show (in which a number of the teachers fell asleep!). We learnt about how Aboriginals use the constellations and stars to find out where they are. We also found out about different planets. Before lunch we went to the Carnival of Science and saw lots of different circus acts and how they are connected to science. After lunch was the lightning show where we learnt about electricity.
The group which I was in then went to Ice Skating (the other group went to Black Light Mini Golf). This was probably the highlight of the camp for me. I watched a number of students who had no coordination on the ice whatsoever! There were also a number of students who became quite capable on the ice. Mrs Symthe and I really enjoyed skating around and helping (and watching and laughing!) all the students. Thiong and Luke certainly showed off an, lets say, interesting style of skating!
After a quick stop at McDonalds for ice creams and drink, we caught a tram to the Melbourne Museum where we explored the Dinosaur and Earth exhibits, as well as the Stuffed Animal exhibit. While we didn’t have a lot of time at the exhibits we were able to make connections between them and our recent inquiry topics.
We then walked to Lygon St where we had a beautiful meal of three different pastas at Cafe Notturno.
After touring the Old Melbourne Gaol, we walked to the MCG. While it was a long journey, we made it with a stop for lunch along the way. The group was further split into two smaller groups and Peter and Alan (colunteers at the MCG) showed us around. Alan was a former premiership coach. He showed us all the nooks and crannies of the MCG, including a number of areas which we as the public, would never have the chance to see.
We then were given the chance to explore the Sports Museum which showed the history of the MCG, Cricket and AFL Football. We then went down a further level and explored a number of different sports, including, athletics, football, soccer, cricket, archery, cycling, reaction times and netball. We could play each of these sports and complete against each other.
Our first stop on Tuesday morning was the Old Melbourne Gaol. It was a very interesting tour and we learnt a lot about the building and it’s occupants. Our tour guide Michelle explained how the prisoners were kept, showed us the rooms which they would have lived in, and even the gallows where Ned Kelly was hung. We also saw the part of the building where the prisoners were kept in solitary confinement for a week or more at a time. Michelle also explained how death masks were created of the prisoners who were hung.
Our first stop on our big camp trip to Melbourne was the Zoo. We caught a tram out to the zoo and managed to get all 86 (yes 86!), students on the one tram at the same time! We split up into our groups and ventured around the zoo, checking out all the different animals. Unfortunately, it did rain and we had to run from shelter to shelter.
After the zoo, half of the group went back to the accommodation and the other half went directly to Crown Casino for tea. We had a choice between McDonalds, KFC or Subway for tea and then got popcorn and a drink to enjoy while we watched Grown Ups 2. After the long walk back to the hostel, it was straight to bed!
5/6C, check out Corey, Jaymes and Mrs Joyce in the local paper!! The article is all about Mrs Joyce’s global connections and all the amazing things that she does in her classroom. When you see her, make sure that you congratulate and thank her for all her wonderful efforts.
